Jim's entry about Obama on his US News blog, Capital Commerce, ( http://www.usnews.com/blogs/capital-commerce/2008/10/16/did-barack-spread-the-wealth-obama-just-blow-the-election.html ) reminded me of an old Peanuts story line.
Linus was running for class president with Lucy as his campaign manager. She had orchestrated a masterful campaign, and was sitting back saying that there was no way they could lose -- when Linus started to talk about The Great Pumpkin. Needless to say, he lost the election.
Now, SNL had a skit where Barack Obama was talking about his alien abduction, adding he could say anything because he was so far ahead. Maybe the SoBOs believed that. But now, it's becoming increasingly clear that BO's "spread the wealth" comment to our new pal Joe the Plumber is striking home with folks across the country.
"Hey, I thought Obama was talking about all those big oil companies," I can imagine they're thinking. "If an average guy like Joe is expected to give more -- am I going to have to pitch in, too?"
As more and more folks look at all the promises that Obama has made, and realize the price tag it will carry, and that the only way all that could happen is if he hits the Joes, Jills, and Jaimes in every corner of our nation with higher taxes -- well more and more they will be like Sally.
Sally started out adoring Linus, and ended up seeing him for what he was. A foolish dreamer who believed in something that didn't exist.
